Creating a New Project (GeoCloud web service terrain)

This tutorial will guide you through the process of creating a new starter project using the New Project Wizard. The tutorial is identical to the tutorial Creating a New Project except that in this tutorial a GeoCloud web service is used as a source for the terrain model.

Requirements

Please notice; You must be connected to the internet to complete this tutorial.

Data

You do not need any data locally on your computer.

Step 1. Start the New Project Wizard

1. Start GeoScene3D.
2. In the Welcome Screen select “New Project Wizard”. Alternatively select “New Project Wizard” from the main file menu.

Step 2. Choose Wizard Mode

1. Press “Next” to go to the “Terrain Source” page.
2. The wizard can operate in different modes. In this tutorial we will select “Simple”.

Step 3. Terrain Model

1. Press “Next” to go to the “Terrain Model” page.
2. We want to use a terrain model from GeoCloud web service. Make sure that “GeoCloud Web Service (select grid manually)” is checked.

Step 4. Web service

1. Press the browse button next to the “Grid Name” box to connect to the GeoCloud web service.

2. In the “GeoCloud” dialog select a portal, here Denmark Public is selected and press “Select Source…” to log in (leave the password blank).
3. After successful login you will see a list of available GeoCloud services.
4. Select the grid appropriate for your region and press “OK”.

Step 5. Add Data

If your modelling data is in Denmark, you now have the possibility to select a WMS GIS map from the GeoCloud Web Service. Otherwise select “None” and press “Next”.

Step 6. Units

You can define the units in the project. As default the settings are meters, but you can also choose yards, miles, kilometers or feet. It is also an opportunity to add a user defined unit.

Step 7. Finish

1. Press next to go to the “Finish” page
2. You are done with the wizard. Press “Finish” to create the project!
3. Save the project.

Step 8. Results

1. The project now contains a terrain model, two cameras, three light sources, a background sky dome, and a map window containing the terrain model grid.

2. In this example the selected terrain grid is larger than the initial scene extent. By default, the initial scene extent is positioned in the center of the terrain grid, in this case in the middle of the bay of Aarhus. See the tutorial Moving Scene Extent.

3. Note that the terrain model has been placed in the group named “Surfaces”. The project also contains group nodes for Profiles, Regions, 2D Grids, 3D Grids, Points, Layers, Data and Lights. Do not delete these group nodes! When adding data with the “Add Data Wizard” the added objects will be placed in the appropriate nodes automatically.
