External Data

Many 3D object types and map layers in GeoScene3D uses external data. As an example a terrain surface model uses a grid for elevations and maybe a bitmap to display on the surface. Another example is well logs that need to extract data from a database or file.

External data in GeoScene3D is handled as “datasets”. In the above terrain surface example, the grid is a dataset and the bitmap is another dataset. Normally you don't think of a bitmap file as a dataset but if the bitmap is located in a database the term “dataset” is more meaningful. Multiple 3D objects and map layers may share the same dataset. Datasets are viewed and managed with the Dataset Manager and the Dataset Editor.

Datasets retrieve their data from “sources”. One dataset type may read its data from different source types, e.g., a grid dataset may read its data from a Surfer grid file, a Model Database, etc. Multiple datasets may share the same source, e.g., multiple grid datasets may be read from the same Model Database source. Data sources are viewed and managed with the Source Manager.
