In the Layer Symbology Editor the visual properties of the layer as they appear in the map can be configured. The only exception is the color scale for grid layer and grid time series layer that must be set in the color scale dialog or in the layer settings dialog both available in the Map Editor.
This dialog is very complex and will not be documented in full here. All changes are safe in the sense that none of the settings available in the dialog affects data in any way.
Common scenarios
To make the layer transparent
1. Activate (highlight) the desired layer. Do this by clicking on its name in the Layer Manager.
2. Right-click the layer and select Object Properties… - this invokes the Vector: [layer name] dialog box for a vector layer and the Raster: [layer name] dialog box for a raster layer.
3. Within the vector/Raster dialog box switch to the Layer tab by clicking on its label at the top of the dialog box.
4. Within the layer tab make sure that the Parameters subtab is active.
5. Change the transparency of the layer by turning up/down in the Opacity field.
To add a label to the layer
1. Activate (highlight) the desired layer. Do this by clicking on its name in the Layer Manager.
2. Right-click the layer and select Object Properties… - this invokes the Vector: [layer name] dialog box for a vector layer and the Raster: [layer name] dialog box for a raster layer.
3. Within the vector/Raster dialog box switch to the Label tab by clicking on its label at the top of the dialog box.
4. Within the label tab make sure that the Label subtab is active.
5. Select the label field in the Field dropdown list.
To change color of the layer marker
1. Activate (highlight) the desired layer. Do this by clicking on its name in the Layer Manager.
2. Right-click the layer and select Object Properties… - this invokes the Vector: [layer name] dialog box for a vector layer and the Raster: [layer name] dialog box for a raster layer.
3. Within the vector/Raster dialog box switch to the Marker tab by clicking on its label at the top of the dialog box.
4. Within the marker tab make sure that the Marker subtab is active.
5. Change color by clicking the color bottom.
To change color of the layer area and outline
1. Activate (highlight) the desired layer. Do this by clicking on its name in the Layer Manager.
2. Right-click the layer and select Object Properties… - this invokes the Vector: [layer name] dialog box for a vector layer and the Raster: [layer name] dialog box for a raster layer.
3. Within the vector/Raster dialog box switch to the Area tab by clicking on its label at the top of the dialog box.
4. Within the area tab make sure that the Area subtab is active.
5. Change color by clicking the color bottom.
6. Within the area tab make sure the the Outline subtab is active.
7. Change width of outline in the Width field
8. Change color by clicking the color bottom.
